About Us
Pisanello's Pizza was among the pioneers of pizza shops.
Prior to the 1960's there were less than 6,000 pizza shops
nationwide. Now there are 3,843 in Ohio alone!

Pisanello's Pizza actually has its roots in Cleveland.
Before there was a Pisanello's Pizza, Ron and Angelo
Pisanello were visited by their godparents who owned a
place in Cleveland called King Cole"s Pizza, and who
believed a pizza shop near Mount Union College would
do well. Encouraged to open their own place, Ron and
Angelo were given permission by their godparents to
use their tried - and - true recipes.

Pisanello's Pizza was founded in September 1955 by
brothers Ron & Angelo Pisanello and Angelo's wife,
Mafalda. The original location was in the Hess building
on Union Avenue next to a Sohio station on the corner
of Union and State Street.

In those days, Alliance had many people walking to
stores and food establishments. Pisanello's had a
window in front that enabled passersby to look into the
kitchen and watch Mrs. Pisanello toss the pizza dough
into the air.

Over the years, the number of owners decreased. In
1959 Ron went on to open a pizza shop in Kent, Oh.,
leaving Angelo and Mafalda. When they divorced,
Mafalda assumed full ownership.

In 1962, Pisanello's moved to 2300 S. Union Ave, next
to the AAA, where it remained for 30 years.
In 1992, the business moved to 344 W. State, across
from Mount Union College.

2005 brought another change in ownership, Gary
Barnes purchased Pisanello's Pizza from Mafalda. It so
happened that Gary's son
and daughter, Brent &
Trisha
, happen to be Mafalda's step-grandchildren.
Brent
and Trisha worked at the pizza shop during
high-school and college, thus creating a family tie in
keeping the business in the family.

In August of 2006, Gary move the business to a larger
facility at 2023 W. State St.. Gary expanded its dinning
room size and created more of an Italian ristorante
along with its traditional pizza.  Gary also changed the
name slightly, to Pisanello's Ristorante & Pizzeria LLC

Gary changed only the legal name, because since the
Pisanello family had the original pizza shop they could
use the name "Pisanello's Pizza", while they still owned
it.
Actually, Jerry Liss trademarked the name "Pisanello's
Pizza" in 1976
While Ron Pisanello had his pizza shop in Kent
Jerry Liss worked for Ron in the 60's while attending
Kent State University and in 1964 purchased the use of
the name and recipes. He then opened Pisanello's Pizza
in Bowling Green which is currently owned and
operated by the Liss family with 19 locations over
Northwest Ohio & Michigan.
